Degree Requirements for a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry

Students are required to complete a course of study the fulfills the general education requirements specified by Illinois College (see Illinois College catalog).  In addition to MATH 223 (4 Credit Hours), 32 semester hours of Chemistry courses are needed for a chemistry degree and are chosen form the following list. For descriptions of each course please refer to the Illinois College catalogue.

Course Credit Hours
CHEM  111  General Chemistry I     4
CHEM  112 General Chemistry II 4
CHEM  203 Organic Chemistry I 4
CHEM  204 Organic Chemistry II 4
CHEM  341Physical Chemistry I 4
CHEM  342 Physical Chemistry II 4
Total 24

In addition, each student must take as least two of the following courses:

Course Credit Hours
CHEM  211 Quantitative Analysis  4
CHEM  309 Biochemistry I 4
CHEM  310 Biochemistry II 4
CHEM  402 Synthetic Principles 4
CHEM  403 Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry 4
CHEM  404 Quantum Chemistry 4
Total 8

Students may also choose to complete a chemistry research project under the guidance of a faculty member (CHEM 411 and 412).   Students may choose to specialize in one of the subfields of chemistry by taking courses in each of the following tracks:
ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (CHEM 211 and 312), BIOCHEMISTRY (CHEM 309 and 310), PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY (CHEM 404 and 312, plus reccommended courses in Math and Physics), and SYNTYETIC CHEMISTRY (CHEM 402 and 403).

It is recommended that students take Physics 101/102 or Physics 201/202, Math 233, CSC 160, 170, and some course work in Biology for certain post-graduate and professional programs.

Upon declaring a chemistry major, each student is assigned a chemistry faculty member to serve as an advisor.  It is expected that students will meet with their advisor on a regular basis to discuss their progress.
