Welcome to the Department of Chemistry!

The Department of Chemistry at Illinois College offers both the Bachelors of Science and Bachelors of Arts degree in Chemistry. Through course selection students may choose to specialize in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry, or synthetic chemistry.  Students also have the opportunity to become actively engaged in original research projects with a faculty mentor.

The chemistry department is located in the Parker Building on the Illinois College campus.  Facilities include two faculty/student research labs, 6 teaching labs and a 300 MHz NMR facility.

Faculty & Staff
Associate Professor Gary Grams, Emeritus, Organic Chemistry
Associate Professor Zvi Pasman, Biochemistry
Associate Professor Clayton Spencer, Chair, Physical and Computational Chemistry
Assistant Professor Brent Yoder, Organic and Natural Products Chemistry
Laboratory Manager, Andy

Laboratory Instructor, Patty Hale

Degree Requirements

The goal of the chemistry program at Illinois College is to provide a broad academic experience within the disciple of chemistry while preparing students for professional careers or advanced study in chemistry. Click on the following links to learn about our degree programs.

Chemistry Major/ Chemistry  Minor

Biochemistry Major

Chemistry/ENVS Combined Major

The department also offers a chemistry course for non-science majors: CHEM 101 Fundamentals of Chemistry.  This course fulfills the general education requirement in natural science or physical lab sciences (Currently, this course may count as BOTH a physical and natural lab science).

Facilities
The department of chemistry is home to a wide range of modern instrumentation used in all fields of chemical analysis.  Major holdings include a Bruker AM300 300-MHz NMR spectrometer, a Varian Saturn IV GC-MS, a Waters quaternary solvent HPLC, a Buck Scientific capillary GC with FID, a Varian 640-IR FTIR, a Perkin-Elmer Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, a Perkin-Elmer Lambda-11 UV-Visible spectrophotometer, 3 Ocean Optics CCD UV-Vis spectrometers, an Ocean Optics spectrofluorimeter, a BAC cyclic voltammograph, and an Anasazi 60-MHz FTNMR.
