NOTE: These directions were made using Windows XP
Professional. The set up for Windows XP Home may be slightly different. The set
up for Windows Vista should be fairly similar and we will be making specific
directions for Vista as they become available. If you are installing a printer
for the first time please see the directions posted here: http://www.ic.edu/IThelpdesk/printer.asp
Any issues should be refered to the helpdesk by calling 3416 or (217) 245 –
3416.
Go to Start -> Control Panel
Under Control Panel you should see an icon for
“Printers and Faxes”

Double click on Printers and Faxes
Right click on the printer icon that was installed earlier in the year to work with the network printer and choose “Properties”
After choosing properties move to thetab labeled as “Ports”

Click the Add Port button below the list of ports available on your PC.
Next you will see the “Printer Ports” window and choose “Standard TCP/IP Port”

Click the “New Port…” button (not the “New Port Type”) and a Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard window will appear, choose “Next”

The next step will ask for a Printer Name or IP address, choose your dorm below and type in the IP address given for your dorm.

Type just the IP address given for your dorm in the “Printer Name or IP Address” box. The “Port Name” box will fill itself in with the appropriate information.

The example given above is for Ellis, please make sure you chose the correct information for your dorm bulding.
Click “Next” and your PC will search for the printer, if it cannot find the printer it may as for a Device Type, just use the default option which is “Generic Network Card”.
You should get one more window in the wizard which means it is complete so click Finish.
Click “Close” on the Printer Ports window.
Make sure your new port you created is in the Ports list and checked with a check mark.

After this you can choose “Apply” and then “Close”
The printer should now work.
