Requirements for a Biology Major: The courses in the Biology Department are designed to give students an understanding of modern biology as a part of liberal education and prepare students for a graduate and professional study in the discipline. A major in Biology consists of a minimum of 32 semester hours in Biology above the 100-level and must include: The first year biology program for majors serves as a solid preparation for more advanced study and is a prerequisite for any higher courses (BIOL 111, 112). The second tier of the biology program includes required courses of BIOL 207 (Genetics) and BIOL 307 (Cell and Molecular Biology). In the third and fourth years of the program, students may select tracks of specialization (e.g., entomology, plant biology, anatomy and physiology, marine biology, zoology, and others). Students must complete at least two of the 200-level biology courses (from BIOL 201-Botany; BIOL 205-Zoology; BIOL 208-Developmental Biology; BIOL 245-Microbiology), and at least two of the 300-level courses. In the senior year all majors complete the program by enrolling in BIOL 401 and BIOL 402 (Seminar I and II, respectively). A major in Biology requires a total of 33-36 credit hours above the BIOL 109 level. Students should complete as many of the following tool courses as possible before enrolling in 300-level courses: Math 133 required for major; Math 123 and Math 213 recommended. Chem 111, 112, and 203 required for the major; Phys 181, 182 (or 201, 202) required for major. A minor in
Biology can be met by taking Biol 111, 112, two biology courses above the
200-level, plus Chem 111, 112. Courses offered at IC
