Majoring in Economics If you are a student who enjoys studying economics and are interested in pursuing a career in business, public service or graduate school studying economics, you will find the economics major ideally suited for your needs. This major allows you to study the field of business within a liberal arts setting and is the best program offered at Illinois College to prepare you for entering a career in business. You not only develop critical thinking skills through your study of economics, but you begin to better understand the professional environment of business, public service or future graduate work. Economics majors are highly encouraged to complete double majors or minors in related areas. These additional areas of study help enhance your marketability for entry-level management positions upon graduation and, depending on your choice of double major or minor, may also help enhance your likelihood of success in graduate school. Recommended complementary minors include: business, finance, accounting, math, and political science.
Economics 105 – Principles of Economics Economics 245 – Statistics Economics 312 – Intermediate Microeconomics Economics 318 – Intermediate Macroeconomics Economics 485 – Senior Seminar in Economics Math 212 – Quantitative Methods in Business At least four courses chosen from: Economics 341 - Money, Banking, and Financial Markets Economics 342 - Public Finance Economics 344 – Development Economics Economics 345 - International Trade Economics 372 - Environmental Economics Finance 357 – International Finance Majoring in Finance If you enjoy studying finance and are interested in pursuing a career in banking, insurance and other sectors of the financial industry you will find the finance track ideally suited for your needs. You not only develop critical thinking skills through your study of economics, but you begin to better understand the critical underpinnings of most decisions made in both private and governmental organizations. Students wanting to major in finance must complete the courses listed below. Students who major in finance typically also minor in one or more related disciplines such as business administration, economics, or accounting. These minors will help enhance your marketability for entry-level financial management positions upon graduation.
