How
do I finance a BreakAway?
As
long as your BreakAway course is part of your regular
full-time course load (12-20 credits per semester), there is no separate
tuition for the BreakAway. Other trip expenses do cost extra, of
course.
When
do you pay? Your BreakAway
leaders have estimated the overall cost as closely as possible and set a
payment schedule that allows them to make timely arrangements for the
trip. They can finalize flight
reservations and such when you have paid at least half of your portion of those
costs. If you receive BreakAway subsidies, that amount is credited toward your
trip. Your final payment for the trip
must be received prior to departure.
How
do you pay? Most students pay by
check. Make it out to Illinois College,
and identify your payment with your name and the name of your BreakAway. Bring or
mail your payment to the Business Office.
Are
you eligible for BreakAway subsidies? Yes, if you a degree candidate with sophomore
standing or higher at the time of the trip. Eligible students receive subsidies of half
the trip’s cost, up to a lifetime total of $750. You apply for these subsidies by checking a
box on the BreakAway Application Form.
How
much does your BreakAway cost overall? Check carefully what your BreakAway’s
listed cost covers. Some BreakAways require extra insurance. Some include all meals, others don’t. Then there are passport and visa fees, if
applicable; the required International Student Identity Card (ISIC); possibly
immunizations, hiking shoes and suitable clothing; very likely, books and
course material; and spending money. If
in doubt, check with your BreakAway leaders.
