How
do I go on a BreakAway?
Students
of any academic rank may participate in Illinois College BreakAways. Some do so during their first year, others as
seniors when they are about to graduate.
The very first thing to do is to inform yourself
about upcoming BreakAways. Pay attention to announcements, check out
listings online, attend information meetings, ask the professors leading the
trips, and – talk to students who may have already participated in various BreakAways!
Once
you decide which BreakAway is for you, apply to
participate. Each BreakAway
has an application due date. It may appear far off to you, but
travel arrangements have to be made well in advance, so it’s a good idea to
think ahead! You fill out this BreakAway
Application Form, write the accompanying essay, and submit two copies of
each (the original and a copy of both form and essay, stapled together)
to the Office of Study Abroad and BreakAways. The Director of Study Abroad & BreakAways forwards one copy to the faculty leaders of that
BreakAway.
When
you know that you will be one of the participants of that BreakAway,
you register for the accompanying
course, normally listed as IDS 202, Travel Study.
If you don’t have a passport
and will need one, it is a good idea to apply for it right away. If you already have a passport, double-check
that it is valid until at least 6 months beyond the dates of the BreakAway.
(Otherwise, with a passport expiration date too close to travel time,
the U.S.
government might not let you leave.)
