How does
a BreakAway get academic credit?
With each BreakAway trip comes a course
that prepares you for what you’ll see and experience when you’re there. Usually, this is IDS 202, Travel Study,
carrying between 1 and 3 credits, depending on the length of the trip and the
number of class sessions. The course is
listed during the semester when preparations take place. For instance, for BreakAway trips occurring
during Spring Break and early summer, pre-trip courses are part of the Spring
Semester schedule.
You register for your BreakAway course as
you would for any other course. Use an
Add/Drop Form and get your BreakAway leader’s signature before adding the
course to your regular semester load.
Some students rearrange their courses to fit a BreakAway into a
full-time schedule.
After returning from their trip, students
normally write a paper reflecting on what they’ve seen and experienced. Students also submit a post-trip
evaluation. These evaluations help us
to improve the overall BreakAway program.
Having completed all requirements related
to your BreakAway, you receive academic credit toward your degree as with any
other credit. Should your BreakAway
trip fall between semesters, for instance into early summer, then your academic
credit is posted on your transcript as soon as possible after you have returned
from the trip and fulfilled the course requirements.
