What is defrag?

  • Short for defragment
  • The process of rearranging the files of your hard disk in a continuous way
  • Putting all the pieces of one file together in the same location

Why defrag?

  • Having to find all the pieces to a file can slow down your computer tremendously
  • Your hard disk is one of the few parts of your computer with moving parts. The more defragmented the hard disk becomes the more the arm has to move. The sooner the hard drive wears out.

How often should I run defrag?

  • At least once a month

How do I defrag my hard drive?

  • Click ‘Start’ > choose ‘All programs’ > choose ‘Accessories’ > choose ‘System Tools’ > choose ‘Disk Defragmenter’
  • Click on the icon for your hard drive (usually C:)
  • Click the ‘defragment’ button
  • Let defrag run. This could take awhile depending on how fragmented your hard drive is.
  • When finished a message will appear “defragmentation is complete”
  • Click ‘close’
