Maintaining a Healthy Computer

Maintaining your computer is essential to keep it running smoothly and healthy for years. Without routine maintenance a computer becomes sluggish and can wear out much faster. Computer maintenance does not have to be troublesome. It is just a matter of scheduling

What are Windows updates?

  • Windows updates are updates created by Microsoft to correct problems and compatibility issues with Microsoft products such as Windows, Word, Excel, etc. and are categorized according to severity:
  • High Priority- the most critical updates to ensure your computer is safe and secure. These updates block potential security issues and major conflicts within Windows itself. When a large number of these updates are needed, a Service Pack is created to cover all the updates. These updates should be installed as quickly as they become available.
  • Software- these updates correct conflicts between Windows and other popular software such as Ms Office, Word Perfect, Macromedia products, Adobe products, etc. and are optional to install. Most of these updates are beneficial to ensure less conflicts with your favorite software.
  • Hardware- these updates correct the way Windows sees and hears your hardware such as your keyboard, mouse, zip drive, etc. and are usually called “drivers”. These updates, though optional, should be installed ensure the Windows knows your hardware is working correctly.

Why install Windows Updates?

  • Windows Updates ensure that your computer is safe and working properly. Since humans write Windows and all other software, it is subject to error. Keeping your computer up-to-date corrects the errors that were missed before the product was released. Updates are created and released for free instead of mass recalls of the software.
