Department of Religion and Philosophy: Honor Code
The Department of Religion and Philosophy fully endorses the Illinois College's statement on
academic integrity. However, we distinguish between intentional plagiarism and confusion about
citation methodology.
- Intentional plagarism will be reported to the Honor Board, which will mete out a punishment.
- Confusion about citation methodology will be discussed with the student, who will be allowed to correct it. However, repeated examples of "confusion" may be assumed to be intentional and
may be reported to the Honor Board, if the faculty member feels this is warranted.
Examples of Plagiarism
Intentional plagiarism includes (but is not limited to):
- Cutting and pasting materials from web sites
- Copying passages from books, articles, or other printed materials
- Copying material from another student's paper, moodle posting, or other source
- Cheating on tests or quizzes by using crib sheets or copying from another student's paper or blue book
Confusion about citation methodology includes (but is not limited to):
Students who have questions about issues of academic integrity are encouraged to discuss them
with their professor.
Honor Statement
Faculty in the department will require students to include the following statement about academic
integrity on work they submit for a grade:
This paper is my own work, all in my words unless specifically indicated. I have fully indicated
all sources, cited directly or indirectly, in the in-text notes and the bibliography or works-cited list.
