The Department of History and Political Science offers a solid liberal arts education to the students of Illinois College, and seeks to develop knowledgeable and discerning citizens capable of making critical decisions in a free society. Courses in history are designed to provide students with an understanding of the development of civilization, an appreciation of its varied social, economic, political, and cultural components and their historical interaction, and a basic familiarity with historical methods and reasoning.
Courses in political science are designed to give students an understanding of political systems, processes, and behaviors, an appreciation of the interactions among them, and a basic knowledge of the the research methodologies used in the discipline.
Courses in both disciplines prepare students with the breadth and depth of knowledge important for careers in law, government service, education, business, and journalism. The curriculum stresses the development of sound research, critical thinking, and communication skills--all valuable tools for lives and careers ahead.
