Scholarships and Awards in the
History and Political Science Department

The Mary Ruth Mundinger Scholar
- This is the department's highest honor and is awarded annually to the most outstanding graduating senior. The award was established in memory of Mary Ruth Mundinger ('81), the daughter of the eleventh president of Illinois College, Donald C. Mundinger, and his wife, June. The award consists of books specially selected for the recipient. All seniors are considered.

The William Jennings Bryan Award in Political Science
- This cash prize is awarded for the best written work in political science. Preference is given to major research papers completed in upper-level classes by department majors. All such papers are considered.

The Fred C. Kirkman Award in History
- This cash prize is awarded for the best written work in history. Preference is given to major research papers completed in upper-level classes by department majors. All such papers are considered.

The Howard E. Schuchmann Award in Public Affairs
- This cash prize is awarded to a member of the senior class on the basis of scholarship, character, and participation in public affairs. Seniors must submit a resume of their public service and an essay or research paper on some topic of public policy. Apply to Prof. Karen Dean by March 1.

The Joe Patterson Smith Memorial Scholarship(s)
- These scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding seniors in the department. All senior majors are considered.

The Mary Ruth Mundinger Memorial Awards
- These awards are made throughout the year to department majors to assist in travel study opportunities. Students who desire funding should apply in writing to the department.

The Joe Patterson Smith Scholarship
- This scholarship is awarded annually to the most outstanding junior in the department. All junior majors are considered.

The Paul C. Verticchio Memorial Award
- This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has completed the junior year and who intends to study law following graduation. Preference is given to students who have participated in Model UN and/or debate.

The Helen Walton Hackett Scholarship in History and International Studies
- This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding upper-class student majoring in History or History and Political Science and International Studies. All such students are considered.

The James A Meeks Memorial Scholarship(s)
- These scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding juniors in the department. All junior majors are considered.

The David S. Watson History Award
- This award is presented each year to the the outstanding sophomore majoring in History or History and Political Science. All such majors are considered.

The Raymond L. Gillmore II Memorial Scholarship
- This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding sophomore majoring in history. All sophomore history majors are considered.
