Literary Theme--Fall 2007
Treasures of the World:
Through
literature, we will explore a few of the worlds most valued masterpieces and
their underlying themes. As author
Steven Lubar said, We are surrounded by things, and we are surrounded by
history. But too seldom do we use
artifacts that make up our environment to understand the past.
Too seldom do we try to read objects as we read books--to understand the
people and times that created them, used them, and discarded them.
By investigating the topics that well-known objects represent, we will
combine literature and artifacts to better understand history, life, the human
condition, and ourselves.

Exploring
the Ties of Humanity Through Literature
"There
can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we
have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added
the experience of the soul."
Arnold Bennett (1867-1931)
This
literary semester, I would really like to focus on what it is that makes all
people around the world essentially the same?
Through literature, I would like to prove that all of us in this room are
just like a group of women gathering together in Africa to gather water for
their family. Those women in Africa
are also just like a group of rebel men in war-torn Iraq.
Those same rebel men are also essentially the same as the American
soldiers against whom they are fighting.
I
am sure many of you are asking yourselves how exactly you might be like any of
the aforementioned people. My goal
this semester is to answer that exact question.
Through literature, I am hoping to prove that all people around the world
are essentially the same through the emotions that all human beings feel.
Each of the literary meetings this semester will be dedicated to one of
these emotions. We will be exploring
each emotion in depth and tying it directly to humanity.
